THE WALKING DEAD By Jon Skillman
Have you noticed the number of zombies plodding through our culture lately? We seem to be infatuated by the unrelenting lumbering of the walking dead. They’re everywhere. They’re in the movies, on TV and they even have zombie jamborees and parades where folks, pretending to be zombies, lurch their way through the streets of our towns and cities.
Well, I think I might have stumbled upon why we have become so engrossed with these gross yet lovable flesh-eaters. We, ourselves, are becoming more and more zombie like! You can find us loitering around the mall, staggering down the street or slouched in restaurants and theaters. Heads bowed, eyes glazed by the pale light emitting from a small device in the palm of our hand. But, unlike our traditional zombie brethren, we are completely oblivious to those around us. We do not feed on the flesh of the living…we seek sustenance from cyberspace, feeding on bytes of data that, for the most part, fills us with useless information. We rally to the cry of, “Google It!” and rejoice with a rousing, “Yahoo!” We are…Googlies.
Well, in truth, I cannot claim to be a Googlie. I’m about as tech- savvy as a stump. I wouldn’t be caught dead camped out with me in front of Best Buy waiting to purchase the latest and greatest…uh…I-thing-a-ma-jiggy. My mug is not on Facebook and I haven’t tweeted since I cracked my lip with a Yo-Yo many moons ago.
I guess what I’m trying to say is; to some, technology has become an object of worship…an idol. I also think technology has reached critical mass and has outpaced our ability to police it. I’m not sold on the value of social media and the internet is wrought with filth and evil. Now don’t get me wrong, I appreciate many of the innovative and beneficial things technology has brought, but I’m not about to face Silicon Valley and pray to Intel. It just seems that for every positive innovation there is an equal and opposite innovation. And it seems that all this “progress” is secular and pretty much amoral. It’s for the world and of the world. There are literally thousands of “Apps” for worldly living but only a few for salvation and eternal life.
Actually, there is really only one valid “App” for Salvation and Eternal Life…and that is found in The Word Of God…The Bible. But lately, just as on the internet, hackers have been planting viruses into the body of Christ and attempting to rewrite God’s code. We are severely warned in Revelation 22:18 (and I paraphrase). If anyone adds anything to or takes anything from the Word Of God there will be some pretty dire consequences. I also believe that whoever does not seek and apply the one and only “App” for Salvation and Eternal Life, will truly be…“the walking dead.”
